Matthew

I didn't have any quotes to add from Matthew, but here he is in his cuteness...

No but(t)s about it

+ Matthew sneezes. Hannah exclaims, "That was a big icicle booger!" Descriptive child!

+ Responding to some bit of disappointing news, Hannah sighed, "That's how my life goes."

+ Apologizing to Matthew, Hannah said, "I'm sorry but-" I cut her off, explaining "No buts, Hannah." She said to me, "I didn't mean 'butt' like bottom, Mommy! Just 'but'."

+ H: I really like Sasha.
Mommy: What do you like about her?
H: Her Barbies.

+ I recently praised Hannah and Matthew when they were playing well together, telling them how happy it made me to see them getting along and being kind to one another. Later, Hannah complied with some instruction I gave her then said, "I obeyed right away, Mommy! How happy does your heart feel now?" So dear, yet I don't want her to think that obedience is for the sake of Mommy's happiness... ay!

Monthly update

Looks like posting once a month is all we can manage these days... so here are a few funnies from October:

- I asked Hannah if she'd like more pancakes. Her answer: "Yeah, sure, I betcha!" (I think she learned this from her paternal grandfather. Wow, didn't realize I was raising a midwesterner!)

- Hannah wrapped an afghan around her shoulders with a regal flair and demanded to Matthew, "Bow down to me!" From reading about Daniel in the Bible??? Innate imperial sense?

- After MUCH anguish, Hannah finally took a bite of the soup that we were having for dinner. She found she liked it and then explained, "I had to whine for a little bit to help it."

- One of my favorite things Matthew says these days is his affirmative response when offered something... such as, "Would you like to go upstairs and play cars?" "Love to!" and/or "Happy to!" So dear to hear him mimic me. He also answers questions about food this way: "Would you like some more hot dog?" "Happy to!"

- I started a flamenco dance class in Sept. and was telling Hannah why I was getting to leave one evening. She asked, "Do you all pretend to be flamingos?" :)

- Hannah was sick last week and wanted to go to the store for crackers when Matthew was napping. I explained that we couldn't leave him and she brightly suggested, "You could just take the monitor!"

- And more on monitors... Hannah is still convinced that you can talk and/or shout into a monitor's receiving end and the person in the transmitter's room will hear you. When going to the park, she put her babies to bed and said, "I'm gonna take my monitor. They settle down when I talk."

- Matthew got to go to work with Daddy for an hour last week since Mommy and Hannah had dentist appts and our plans for his care fell through. That hour included a trip to the cafeteria with eggs, donuts (after he'd breakfasted at home) and a stop on the toy dept. floor scoring him a dino and truck. Every day since, he asks "Where Daddy go?" When I respond, "To work", he exclaims, "Daddy work fun!"

We're back in the blogosphere...

After two months of silence, we're back. I have lots of notes of things to post... here are some in random order:

From Matthew:

+ At the breakfast table eating pancakes, Matthew says, "Pretty good, Mommy, pretty good!"

+ As I was getting ready to leave for Leah's 30th bday, wearing a blouse that requires ironing no less, Matthew said, "Nice shirt, Mommy. Nice shirt!" He said the same to Shae the next morning when he came down ready for church. :)

+ Our dear sister-in-law Glad made the coolest "Memory" game for us last Christmas with the family's pictures on top. Matthew found that game in our puzzle bin, and ran into the kitchen shouting, "2 Lijahs, Mommy, 2 Lijahs!!!" (He found the pair of tiles with his cousin Elijah.)

And just in case you're wondering, yes, most of his exclamatory statements (and declaratives, too, for that matter) do follow the endearing XXX-Mommy-XXX pattern.

+ Riding in the car with the window down, Matthew begged Daddy to go faster. When his request was granted, he said, "Oh, awesome, awesome!" First time I heard that word from him!

+ Again in the car, heading west on 65th Street, Matthew quickly identified the route he takes with Daddy on some Saturday mornings, "Donee shop, donee shop?" (The Donut Connection). Sadly, we weren't headed there at that moment.

+ Several weeks ago, I tried to drink tea and inhale at the same time, resulting in an episode of choking/coughing. The kids watched from the table... amused! When I recovered, Matthew asked, "Again?"

+ In Colorado, we offered the kids fudgesicles for a treat one afternoon after naps. The next day when Matthew awoke, he said, "So hungry, Mommy, so hungry," and then looking at me hopefully, "Lollipop? Chocolate?" This happened the next two days, as well!

+ Matthew's been showing some interest in pottying. He reports all his BMs ("stinky poopy, Mommy, stinky poopy"). We were reading a story about Jesus' birth last week and the illustration showed a baby on his back, on a cloth, w/o clothes. Knowing that there's only one time Matthew finds himself in such a position, he said, "Baby Jesus stinky poopy." I'm sure He did at times!

+ Favorite Matthew-isms: strawberry = "strawbuddy", dinosaurs = "NOsaurs"

From Hannah:

+ I laughed when Hannah got out of the bath because the rubber mat's pattern was imprinted on her bottom. She strained to see it and said, "My head's not long enough like a giraffe head. I need a giraffe head to see my bottom."

+ Hannah said she was still hungry after not eating much for lunch, so I offered her what she hadn't finished: broccoli or pita. "What else is available, Mom?" she asked. Clever. Answer: nothing until these are gone. :)

+ Another pancake breakfast (I have a great recipe w/all whole wheat flour and I add a bunch of ground flax seed--let me know if you're interested :)), and I ask if Hannah would like some more. "Yeah, it sure tastes good! Thank you, Mom." Sweet, unprompted words. Rare.

+ When Matthew was playing with his "NOsaurs", Hannah quipped, "There's no 'saurs around because they all stink!" (extinct) :)

+ Listening to U2's "Miss Sarajevo" song with the glorious Pavarotti solo, Hannah exclaimed, "He's just like Scotty!" A shout out to my dear brother who loooooooves to sing like an opera star.

+ Thanks, Auntie Shawna for sharing this gem:
At a recent family gathering with the McCowens, Hannah was on the swing with her cousin Becky (4 months older). Becky said, "I love you, Hannah." Hannah's reply? "I love me, too." Seriously. Apparently, Hannah returned the love only after lots of prompting and said, "I love you, Becky, and I love me, too." Charming.

+ Hannah asked to look at the world atlas we have instead of reading stories before her nap the other day--(good sign, Dad? :)). She wanted to talk about her pretend friends and where they lived, an activity we do with her US Map puzzles and our real friends and family. She asked me to read the names of the towns/cities that she pointed to. "My friend Beebee lives in...." "Amarillo." I said. Hannah asked, "Where's rojo?" I love my girl!! She does not miss a beat.

+ At a recent tea party in Hannah's room, I brought her a piece of gum as a "hostess gift". She loved the idea of hostess gifts and since we take turns hosting these parties and bringing friends, she was ready with a gift when I was hosting. It was her "Bug Bungalow", a little mesh box for catching bugs. It had her name on a piece of masking tape since she recently took it to school. She held it out to me and said, "Here you go! It's from a garage sale." Laughing, I took it, explained that she didn't have to tell me where she got it (a bad habit of mine)... and then realized she was referring to the homemade "price tag" (masking tape, garage sale style, indeed!). Too funny. :)

My day

There were also pictures of both kids with pens up their noses but those photos wouldn't load for some reason... obscene?

They are both getting over flu bugs/fevers.

Puppets: a play in two parts

I'm very proud of myself for scoring this puppet theater w/ puppets for $2 at a garage sale. :) I know it was really just a gift.

Updates from the last month

I've been terrible about keeping up with this blog, but I'm doing what I can, so here it is. I know I've missed sharing lots of bloggable moments, but these are the ones I jotted down...

+ After helping me whip cream for Grandpa's strawberry shortcake birthday cake, Hannah turned to me and said, "Thanks for letting me be your taster. I preciate that."

+ My dear husband was grocery shopping for us and grabbed a box of Target-brand cheerios, just like the list said. He accidentally grabbed the "honey nut" kind, though they're virtually identical in the store brand packaging. I only realized what they were as I was serving them to the kids... too late.
H: Are these the honey ones!!??!??
Me: They are. (nonchalant)
H: WHERE did you get them? At Grandma's house?

+ Matthew increasingly wants to be just like his big sis. She prefers to drink out of a normal cup, not a sippy cup. We still use sippy cups when dining in small spaces (on the tray of the booster chair, etc.) because of constant spills there. We let her drink most of her drink and then take the top off so she can finish it "like a big girl".

Matthew held his cup up to me the other day and demanded, "Big girl! Big girl!" He wanted me to take that top off so he could do it, too. :)

Matthew awakes... more later.

From Matthew's Mouth

Our little man is talking a ton. He's a delight... when he's not whining.

The other day Matthew brought a box of ABC books to the couch where I was sitting. He handed it to me and said, "Share. Nice!" Just like I praise him when he shares with others.

Matt-Man, as dubbed by our friend Sarah Brown, is quite a flirt. He bats his eyes, tucks his chin, tilts his head and smiles. He was doing this number at breakfast the other day and Hannah said, "He just flirted at me!"

Hannah and Matthew were eager to go downstairs after breakfast but I was still cleaning up and asked them to wait. "We can go downstairs and be nice to each other," Hannah promised. I agreed to let them try it since I was almost done and she started to show Matthew how to go down the stairs on his belly, knowing he's not totally safe in socks on the wooden stairs forward. He exclaimed happily, "Idea! Idea!" Just like I tell him, "That's a good idea." Too sweet.

His most common mealtime chant: Meat!! More meat.
The boy ate 3 turkey franks on Memorial Day. 2 pieces of deer sausage (thanks, Martins!) for breakfast the other day. He is a hardcore carnivore!

Catching up...

Here are some fun updates from Hannah:

ON CLOTHES:
To me: "I want you to wear short sleeve pants, just like me because it's so nice outside. You'd be hot, hot, hot."

Daddy comes downstairs wearing clown-like, orange and white striped warm-up pants from U of Tennessee (a joke from a colleague at work), and says, "What do you think?" Hannah: "They look good, Shae."

Emerging from her room w/last year's jacket dress, "This still fits me! The arms are like capris."

On LIFE:
- While dropping Aunt Amy off at the airport, Hannah saw a group of soldiers wearing camo. "Why are they all wearing the same outfit, Mommy?" "Because they're soldiers, honey." "Where are their swords?" (Such a good question from my sweet 3-yr-old who know soldiers from Bible stories...)

- Shae and I like to tease each other and get Hannah's input. Shae asked, "Who is sassy, Mommy or Daddy?" "Mommy!" she replied with too much confidence. "Then what is Daddy?", I asked. "He's GREAT!"

- 5:00pm whine time. Daddy's out of town. Hannah complains, "I want to eat dinner at a restaurant." I explain that we're not going to, etc., and remind her of her recent trip to McDonald's with her cousins. She retorts, "McDonald's is not a restaurant." Yes!!!! I must have done something right! :)

But then a few days later, she spies McD's while we're running errands and asks to go there. It's 3:00pm and we have groceries to buy, so I explain that we're not going to do that now. "But McDonald's is open!" She's figured out how to tell: there are cars in the parking lot.

- I'm waiting for Hannah to do her pre-nap potty try while I sit on her bed. She comes in to ask what I was doing and I say, "Picking my nose." Then I hear my own voice coming out of her mouth, "Hey, let's not say that." Pause... "You can't put 'em in your mouth."

Breakfast at Matthew's (and Lunch at Hannah's)

We were hoping he'd show you his "bedroom eyes", which he flashes as he tucks his chin down and bats those lashes. Watch out, ladies! But of course, I was too late with the camera.

Here's what it's like to try to take a picture of these two...

From Matthew...

Happy to report that my dear second born is quite verbal, too. It must be in the genes. :) I'll have to post some of his funnier words sometime... they include peacock, share, turn, oval and again!

His antics are quite amusing, though not always verbal. We often sing our grace/prayer before meals and Matthew readies himself by folding his hands. The other day during breakfast I was toasting a second round of English muffins and singing "Do you know the muffin man?" He looked up at me mid-bite and folded his hands reverently. So dear.

From Hannah...

+ Bringing me her doll with a new dress, Hannah announced, "My friend from college gave her that dress." Realizing she might think it's a place, I asked her where college was and she said, "Far away." Too funny. This is a tribute to all my FRIENDS FROM COLLEGE who send my kids such dear things.

+ To Matthew, while cutting with scissors, Hannah said: "I'm sorry, my dear. This is not for you."

+ Playing with a candle snuffer, Hannah asked, "This is for getting the burns off of candles, right, Mom?"

+ In her words: "I like getting time outs because they don't hurt my bottom."

+ When finding out that she would be with Daddy for the evening and not her favorite sitter, Grace, Hannah complained, "I don't want to stay with Daddy." When appraised of the consequence of whining (loss of a privilege, in this case), she said, cheerfully, "I changed my mind! I love Daddy."

+ At her cousins' house, Hannah had gathered all of the stuffed animals in a bag and was not willing to share. When her cousin Becky complained, Hannah said, "But I'm her guest!" Too funny. Guests DO get first dibs at our house, so she's picked something up...

Hannah funnies

+ Tonight I was reading and praying with Hannah before bed. As I was praying, she bit my finger. I admonished her and told her to be quiet and listen. Her reply: "Biting is quiet." Wow. Where does that girl get her sass????

Then she proceeded to pray a long, sweet prayer and at the end said, "Are you going to write that down on your list?" Hilarious! She knows I jot down funny things she says. :)

+ After I cut up an orange like our friends the Browns do (into orange "smiles"), Hannah said, "That's really neat, Mom. I'm so glad you taught us that." She cracks me up.

+ Warning: the following is scatalogical. Hannah's been pooping during her naps in her small potty that I put in her room (she can't open the door to get to the big one during naps; it sticks). I heard her singing on her monitor, "Mommy will be so happy" over and over--I'll post the video of this! I went down to check it out and she said, "Look, Mommy! I did a broken tree poopy!", indicating the formation of her bowel movement... it did resemble a broken log. What could I say?

Matthew, my helper, in action

Other bloggable sayings (or at least they seemed so in the moment).

+ Hannah is excited about sounds and words these days, imagine that! :) Whenever she hears too similar sounds or words she says one "starts with" the other. We're still working on all those connections.

When I offered her some honey on her toast, she said, "Hey! Honey starts with "honey", like daughter "Honey" (my pet name for her :))."

After taking our leave from some friend's house, Hannah remarked, "Bye starts with buy, like to buy things!"

+ This is from my mom's visit in January: At breakfast, my mom kindly prepared some toast for Hannah, putting jam on it. Hannah took one bite and said, "This jam tastes like butter!" Poor kids, in our house it's either butter or jam--she never knew she could have both!

+ Awaking to another snowing morning (March 5th to be exact), Hannah hung her head and said, "Now it can never be summer." We talked about the seasons and I explained that God made them to come at different times in different parts of the world. Thinking for a minute and remembering our monthly habit, she said, "Let's flip our calendars!", as if we could accelerate spring that way. If that were the case, we'd have been there for a while now!

+ Hannah noticed a woman walking down the street during breakfast last week. She asked if it was our neighbor Kathy who walks her dog all the time. It wasn't and Hannah was still curious who it was. It was a lady who works downtown and takes the bus to and from the stop at the end of our street. Having seen her with her kids at the park, Hannah asked why this mommy was going to work. I told her there were a lot of reasons that mommies work outside the home. Then came, "You don't work." I explained that my work now is to be at home with her and Matthew. She thought for a minute and then said, "Your work is our bodies!" And strangely added, "Matthew doesn't know that yet." (Maybe an echo of when I've tried to explain things to her that he doesn't understand??) What beautiful work I have.

+ Protesting after being put to bed, Hannah was calling out for me. Shae went in to see what she needed and was greeted with, "I didn't call your name." Wow. A lotta sass in that little body! All from the McCowen side, to be sure.

Preschool Program :)

The quality isn't great--the room was fairly dark. Hannah is wearing a dark green dress with leggings (her favorite, from Cal & Sammy!). Hannah is doing her own thing a lot of the time. Note Sammy digging for gold in the last shot (bottom right). :)

Minnesota

On the way to church this morning, Hannah was pointing out forests (large groups of trees) and other things she saw outside. As we passed a lake, I asked her what that big white space was. She said, "Snow!" "Yes," I answered, "but what's under the white snow?" "Dirty snow," she said. A very likely answer here in MN!

Also at breakfast...

"Can I have some fruit that I don't like with sugar on it?" (request for grapefruit)

"Where's Daddy?" (He had stayed home earlier in the week because he was sick.)
Me: He's at work today.
H: But he will get all his friends sick!

Already?

At breakfast the other day, Hannah started talking and said, "At school, the kids were sitting at the table and one girl said her mom is really, really nice."

Me: Oh, that's good. What did you say, Hannah?

H: I said you were kinda nice.

Me(a)l-o-drama

Hannah has been eschewing crusts for some time now. I don't really know what to do; I've tried the eat them if you want _________, the "they're really the best part", removing them, etc. Today, I offered some more peanut butter on her plate to dip them in with her apple. After consuming all the apple and PB, she said, "I didn't have time to eat the crusts."

During the holiday barrage of treats, Hannah was delighted at the increase in sugar in our house. As she ate a cookie with relish, I said, "You are a sugar girl!" She promptly began to sing, "Sugar girl, sugar girl, sugar all the way" to the tune of Jingle Bells.

Varying from the binary options I usually present, I offered Hannah carrots, apple or pear after she'd had some crackers for a snack. She asked for cereal. I repeated the first options and she said, "Say cereal!"

I asked Hannah what she had for snack at school last week and she said, "Clementines with crust-es!" I asked for clarification and she said, "The crust-es were the same color as the clementines." Oranges with the peel on?

Grandmothers

My dear mom flew back from CO with us since Shae returned early and was traveling for work (a MILLION thanks to flight attendant Aunt Amy for buddy passes and flight benefits!!!). As Grandmom was putting Hannah down for a nap, she pretended to snore in her bed while Hannah was singing. Hannah quickly put an end to it, "Wake up, Grandmom! You have to go help my mom." Apparently, it was clear WHY Grandmom had come home with us!

Shae's dear mom came over this weekend to see us after our trip to CO. Matthew had a hard time settling down for the night and Grandma went to sing to him. Hannah and I were in the living room and here's what transpired...

H: What is Grandma going to do?
L: She is going to sing to Matthew.
H: She is very kind.
L: Yes, she is.
H: You are not.
L: Why am I not kind?
H: Because you growl at me when I do wrong things.
L: Am I kind to you most of the time?
H: Yes, but Grandma is very, VERY kind.

God bless Grandmothers!!!

Imagination

As she was eating lunch, Hannah pointed to her blanket in a heap on the table.
Hannah: "I can't sleep in my blanket. People think it's a cave."
Me: "What are they thinking?" (expressed as, "Wow, how silly of them!")
Hannah, taking it literally: "A cave."

Same blanket is draped over her dresser as I walk into the room. Pointing at it, she exclaims, "My sister gave this to me!" I ask, "What's your sister's name?" She replies, "Cinderella." I thought about telling her who that would make her but she hasn't heard the story yet so I decided not to go there. :)
